Aftercare information
The care doesn't stop once you leave our studio. This page is dedicated to having what we have found to be the most effective aftercare advice and is industry standard.
-
Clean your piercing twice daily, use sterile saline solution only. We recommend SteriPierce, Neilmed or Piercemed and it's what we stock at Anatomy Arts. For oral piercings rinse with non-alcoholic mouthwash and fresh water after you eat and drink.

-
After you clean your piercing give them a pat dry with some sterile gauze or cotton buds (depending on your style of jewellery) and after the shower.

-
Downsize your piercing after the recommended timeframe given to you by your piercer or when you notice that your swelling has ballooned up, starts to plateau and then begins to subside. This can take 4-6+ weeks. Oral piercings can need a downsize sooner.

-
Don't sleep on your new piercing, this can fast track migration and rejection issues.

-
LITHA! Leave it the heck alone, the more you touch, fiddle, play, knock or bump your new piercing you will find your new piercing in trouble.

Some helpful tips and tricks:

Wash your hands before cleaning your piercings.
Do give them a good rinse in the shower with hot running water - this can help soften any stubborn crusties!
For body piercings, don't wear high waisted or tight clothing on top of your new piercing.
Don't twist the jewellery to keep the piercing open.
Leave your jewellery in for the duration of healing, removing it for sports etc. will cause you some issues - with the exception of downsizing.
Don't use salt water, tea tree oil, peroxide or whatever else the internet tells you to.
Avoid putting makeup or skincare products on fresh piercings.
Avoid smoking and vaping with fresh oral piercings.
Do expect some redness, bleeding, soreness, throbbing sensation, swelling, tightness, crusties and even some bruising after being pierced - when in doubt, reach out!

Info regarding rejection, migration, irritation etc:

Piercings can migrate and even reject, some more than others. Eyebrow, navel, bridge, surface and dermal piercings are amongst the most common. One bad snag, not downsizing, sleeping directly on healing piercings, build up of crust, picking/playing with healing piercings can all cause issues. If you see dark red/purple colouring and/or the angle or depth of the piercing change its always best to book for a piercing consultation so we can troubleshoot and figure out the best course of action. Irritation is more common than rejection, even rarer again are infections. Irritation bumps appear when aftercare isn't being followed, piercings are not being dried properly, crust build up, bad snag/knock, external factors such as makeup or hair care products coming in contact with your healing piercing, your general health etc. and will go down once the route of the irritation has been figured out. Some piercings are more notorious for irritation bumps such as inner ear piercings such as daith and rook piercings as they are tougher to thoroughly dry. Patience and communication with your piercer is key, we are always happy to help and are always available on the other side of an email/message to help. Most of the time we can work from images to help troubleshoot, unless absolutely necessary we would recommend an in-person consultation.

Permanent jewellery upkeep:

Sterling silver and gold filled jewellery is quite durable, but can need a polish after time especially sterling silver - you can purchase polishing cloths inexpensively online. If you have build up in and around the links on your chain you can use warm water mixed with some dish soap and a soft bristled toothbrush to help remove. Avoid putting perfumes, lotions, self tanners etc. to preserve the surface finish of your jewellery. PH, sweat and natural oils from the body can cause natural wear to your chain along with high humidity. Don't over expose your chain to chemicals in pools or prolonged exposure to any moisture. Wearing your jewellery consistently under gloves can also tarnish your jewellery quicker. Be careful with clothing as any snags can stretch your chain and it may snap.
We offer a rewelding service for any of our customers, if there is a breakage under 30 days of making your bracelet or anklet we will fix it for free. At any point after that there is a charge of £10 for the service fee + £5 per jump ring - you can also use this service if you would like to add a charm at any point.
